Skinning instructions for gameheads and mammals
Don't
Cut the animals throat - it's totally
unnecessary  and will ruin the cape.
Don't
Drag the animal for miles - Not only is it hard
on you, deer hair is brittle and breaks off
easily, leaving bare patches on the shoulders.
If you have to drag your deer, either place it
on something slick or try to keep the shoulders
off the ground.
Don't
Fasten a rope around the neck  to drag the
animal - A rope will quickly ruin  the cape and
it cannot be fixed. Fasten the rope around the
base of the antlers.
Don't
Leave the animal riding in the back of your
truck all day or hanging in a tree Get the
animal to the taxidermist as quickly as
possible. Warm weather and bacteria are the
number one causes of hair loss, and ruined
capes.
I prefer fresh capes, as it is easier to access
any damage that the cape may have if it isn't
frozen.
Do
Leave about 4 inches of the neck attached to
the skull. This is necessary for an accurate
neck swell measurement by your taxidermist.
Do
Read the instructions for skinning  your animal
found at the Skinning animals for taxidermy
mounting link above..
Do
Feel free to call your taxidermist for
suggestions on what to do with your trophy
once you have it or better yet, call before your
hunt begins.
Do
Have an idea ahead of time of where you
intend to hang your trophy in your home once
completed . This will make a difference in the
pose you choose.
Do
Listen to suggestions that your taxidermist
may have on different mounting options. They
will try to mount your trophy to best enhance
any unique  features it may have, or hide any
imperfections and maximize the impact that
the antlers make.
